Today is delicious. March 28, 2017 marks four years of sobriety on Planet Hillary, and the taste of life today is so much sweeter than I could ever have imagined. Before I got sober, life was crazy, chaotic, and convoluted. I didn’t know who I was. I didn’t know who I wanted to be. I acted like I knew it all, but when it came down to it, I didn’t have a single answer to any of my questions. I alienated the people I loved most and became a miserable lost human being trying to escape the hellish reality I had created for myself.
Four years ago today, I was given an opportunity to try something different, and I did. It was not easy. It took endurance, time, money, hard-work, and a whole lot of patience with myself. I found out how to “trudge the road to happy destiny,” and trust me, it was a slow and daunting trudge at several points. But the trudge has taken me this far, and if I stick with it, I know everything will work out in the end. If good times come, I will be able to enjoy them, and if hard times come, I will be ready for them. This is what I like to call recovery in action. The active verb recovering is used to describe life in sobriety. One is not ever fully recovered, but always in a state of recovering. This is because recovery is like life; an ever evolving organism constantly moving forward. You don’t really achieve or complete life because we can always grow and get better as life progresses. One must simply live it every day, do your best, work hard and when it’s over, you go on to the next thing. So what is the next thing for this woman in recovery? I have decided to take a little walk in the woods.
On May, 21st 2017, I will be embarking on a thru-hike of the Appalachian Trail. I want to do this to inspire others, to advocate and raise money for recovery, and immerse myself in discovering who I am in sobriety. I will be make a few pre-trek posts pertaining to gear, preparation, recovery, the CYAAR, and probably some just sheer excitement. So check back in soon to see where I am on my progress toward getting ready for the AT, and don’t forget to stop by: https://www.gofundme.com/ksu-cyaar-scholarship-fund to donate to a great cause along the way!
